SA shines on international stage

14 November, 2016

Barossa winery, Seppeltsfield, has won the prestigious title of Best Wine Tourism Service at the Great Wine Capitals event in Portugal.

Seppeltsfield was recognised as a global leader in its field by an international panel of wine tourism professionals.

The award ceremony – held in Porto – was followed by the announcement Adelaide has won its bid to host the 2018 Great Wine Capitals annual general meeting and industry conference. The event will attract wine, food and tourism leaders to South Australia.

The State’s double win was topped off with an invitation to attend the Mainz Wine Festival in Germany in August next year. The event is expected to attract more than 500,000 visitors, providing yet another platform to further promote SA’s premium wine to the world.

It’s been a fantastic week for South Australia in Portugal. It was our State’s first opportunity on the international stage as a member of the Great Wine Capitals global network – and we did ourselves proud.

Seppeltsfield’s win is extremely well deserved – and will not only support their business but will have flow on benefits to the Barossa region and the State’s visitor economy.

I congratulate all our State finalists for their dedication and important contribution to SA’s regional food, wine and tourism industries.

The announcement of Adelaide’s successful bid to host the 2018 Great Wine Capitals annual general meeting and industry conference is another huge win, confirming our position as one of the greatest wine regions in the world.

South Australia has a unique history of winemaking. We have some of the world’s oldest vines, and our wines are amongst the best in the world.

The State’s wine industry generates almost $1.8 billion in revenue, with $1.2 billion of this from wine exports to countries including the United Kingdom, China and Hong Kong, the US and Canada.

This award comes fittingly in the month we celebrated the third anniversary of JamFactory’s arrival to the Seppeltsfield estate – the real game changer to our art tourism and significant to the rebirth of our home as a multi-layered ‘village’.

This award signals a completed transition of Seppeltsfield from a staid – albeit it historic - wine property, to a dynamic and multi-experiential destination, where wine, regional food and art are equally celebrated and promoted.

The Barossa and South Australia can be proud of a now internationally – benchmarked tourism asset. It’s now time to promote this achievement and capitalise on any visitation potential.
