2018 WCA Wine Media Cadet, Lieke van der Hulst
30 August, 2018 - Lieke van der Hulst
As the 2018 WCA Wine Media Cadet, Leike will gain exclusive experiences and insights into SA's wine industry as part of a tailored program, which will see her develop her wine writing skills and be published on this blog.
Leike's experience includes:
- Science outreach coordinator for Why Waite (Waite Campus Urrbrae)
- Paxton cellar door, following vintage 2018
- PhD wine science, smoke taint 2014-2018
- Hospitality, festival and wine show roles 2011-2018
- Bsc and Msc Degree in ‘Life Science & Technology’ (biotechnology), Netherlands
Lieke is currently working part-time as the science outreach coordinator at the Adelaide Waite campus. In her role here she motivates high-school students for a career in science, and introduces them to the viticultural, oenology and agricultural research performed in SA. She can also be found at Paxton’s cellar door in McLaren Vale, enthusiastically talking about wine, her time as a cellar hand last vintage and her (recently finished) PhD from the University of Adelaide in wine science.
Back in the Netherlands, Lieke combined a study of biotechnology and science communication with bartending. Upon her arrival in Australia in 2011 these three aspects of her life travelled with her and next to her most current degree, Lieke has accumulated vast experience in the South Australian wine industry, including work in different wine bars, cellar doors and as cellar hand.
Lieke is looking forward to combining her love for the wine industry, passion for (science) communication and knowledge of wine and winemaking during the course of the WCA Cadetship.
